From Umito, among tended chestnut groves and singing streams, the trail climbs toward the Volpara and Prata Waterfalls, liquid heart of the Laga. Water accompanies every step, refreshes the air and tells ancient stories of shepherds, charcoal burners and partisans.
Through humid forests and trembling lights you reach the waterfall, a veil of water that descends gently among the rocks, where time seems to stop and the mountain breathes together with those who listen to it.
From the village of Umito, on the slopes of the Monti della Laga, begins one of the most evocative routes in the territory of Acquasanta Terme: a journey that follows the rhythm of the streams and leads to the Prata Waterfalls and the Volpara, in the heart of the Park.
After leaving the car in the small parking area at the end of the village, follow a white road that crosses chestnut groves tended with passion. The sound of water accompanies every step: the trail runs alongside streams and small springs among mosses, ferns and light filtered through the trees.
Shortly after the detour to Prata, which is visited by climbing to the left for 20 minutes, the route continues toward Volpara, reaching the Scalelle Refuge (805 m) and a pure water spring. From here the road narrows and the forest becomes denser, while the Rio Volpara descends toward the valley changing names several times: Fosso della Montagna and finally Rio Garrafo, which carves gorges and caves of remarkable beauty.
Along the route you encounter the Fornetto, an ancient mountain oven restored in 2020 thanks to the work of the Agrarian Communities. In the past these forests were alive with shepherds and charcoal burners, who built combustion “piazzas” to produce charcoal.
The religious toponyms – Ara della Croce, Porta del Papa, Fonte Sant’Amico – tell of the mountain spirituality of a place also marked by history: during World War II, Umito and Pozza were the scene of roundups that cost the lives of dozens of inhabitants and partisans.
Today, the trail offers an experience of natural immersion and collective memory. The sound of water, constant shade and comfortable seating along the way make the excursion suitable for everyone, perfect for finding balance and breath.
