Lu Vurghe
Lu Vurghe is the historic thermal spring of the hamlet of Santa Maria, a place where sulfurous water flows hot directly from the ground, forming small natural pools still frequented by residents and visitors today. It is one of the most authentic thermal sites in the area, linked to a millennial tradition and recognized as one of the first nuclei of Acquasanta’s thermal tradition.
Lu Vurghe represents one of the strongest symbols of the thermal identity of Acquasanta Terme. Located at the foot of the hamlet of Santa Maria, it was already known in ancient times as a healing place due to the presence of hot sulfurous waters, which constantly flow from multiple points in the ground.
Here nature creates small spontaneous pools, continuously fed by the springs: a simple, essential system of enormous cultural value. For generations, the inhabitants have used these pools for free baths and therapeutic practices, keeping alive a tradition that predates modern thermal facilities by centuries.
Lu Vurghe is accessible via the Thermal Springs Trail, the route that connects the “Sotto Acquasanta – Pacca della Vecchia” spring with Santa Maria. Arriving from the trail, the visitor enters a small natural amphitheater where vapors rise in the morning and the sound of water accompanies the rural landscape.
The site retains an authentic and popular character, unaltered, which tells of the community’s primitive relationship with the hot waters and testifies to how Santa Maria can be considered, in every respect, the first thermal village in the Acquasanta area.
Today Lu Vurghe is one of the most photographed and frequented places by visitors seeking natural and rejuvenating experiences, a key point in the narrative of the thermal renaissance of the Municipality.
