Unique in its kind and fascinating from every angle, Castel di Luco is one of the most iconic landmarks of Acquasanta Terme.
Its rare circular layout—almost unique in Europe—and its commanding position on a natural travertine spur define a defensive architecture rooted in the Middle Ages. The earliest documented evidence dates back to the 11th century, when the castle belonged to the ancestors of the dynast Mattafellone, who donated it to the Bishop of Ascoli in 1133.
Over the centuries, the castle served as a fortified residence, a strategic point along the ancient Via Salaria, and the seat of noble families such as the Ciucci, key figures in local history between the 15th and 17th centuries. Historical documents record restorations, internal divisions of the Palatium, military activities, and a network of relations linking Luco to the religious centres of San Salvatore and the Annunziata.
Walking along the historic path leading up to the fortress, visitors can still encounter traces of the ancient village: the small cobbled road, the walls, the well, the cistern, and the remains of the murus grossum that once defended the settlement. The entrance—accessible via a staircase carved into the rock—leads to an intimate noble complex, once equipped with machicolations, wooden watchboxes, and loopholes for arquebuses.
The historical interiors, described in archival sources, featured vaulted frescoed halls, depictions of religious figures and members of the noble household, a large wine cellar with barrels and channels for grape harvesting, and the ingenious “refrigerator” of the ancient kitchen. At the foot of the castle, the historic spring with its 1518 inscription still survives.
Today, Castel di Luco retains its timeless charm as a gateway to the medieval villages of the Upper Tronto Valley.
The castle is now a beautifully restored private historic residence, warm and welcoming, and open to visitors by reservation. The visit offers the opportunity to step inside one of the most evocative medieval buildings of the Marche Apennines.
