A.S.A. Speleoclub - Associazione Speleologica Acquasantana CEA

The Acquasantana Speleological Association (A.S.A.) is one of the most historic and representative organizations of Acquasanta Terme, guardian of a natural and cultural heritage that runs deep into the earth. Originally founded in 1936, the association was among the first in Italy to systematically study the area’s karst and sulfurous system, contributing to the discovery and mapping of the thermal springs that still today uphold the curative and regenerative reputation of Acquasanta’s waters.

After a period of inactivity, A.S.A. was re-established in 1982 thanks to the commitment of local enthusiasts and researchers, becoming a reference point for speleological research, environmental education, and the scientific promotion of the Apennine underground environment. Today, its activities intersect closely with those of the Environmental Education Center (CEA), where field experience—within the Garrafo Gorge and the karst-sulfurous caves—is transformed into an educational and outreach program of great value.

The association is not limited to exploration: it promotes in-depth knowledge of the territory through environmental education programs, speleology courses, guided excursions, and educational activities aimed at students, enthusiasts, and researchers. The Italian olm (Geotritone italico), a living fossil inhabiting the Garrafo caverns, is just one of the symbols of this unique ecosystem, where water, stone, and time interact in a slow, continuous transformation.

The A.S.A. headquarters features a 25-bed guesthouse, a speleology training gym, screening and meeting rooms, a library, photographic and documentary archives, and all the technical equipment needed for cave expeditions. The association also safeguards a vast collection of scientific studies and reports, including research conducted in collaboration with NASA scientists on life forms in sulfurous environments—evidence of the international relevance of its work.

Over the years, A.S.A. has also promoted initiatives such as the rediscovery and enhancement of “Lu Vurghe”, now renowned for its natural thermal pools, which emerged precisely thanks to the interest and investigative work of Acquasanta’s speleologists.
