Sasso Spaccato

Sasso Spaccato is not just a spectacular rock formation: it is a natural threshold that for centuries has connected the village of Tallacano with the Monte Ceresa valley and its most isolated hamlets. This passage, nestled between dense woods and steep slopes, was once one of the most traveled routes for residents to move around, trade, and reach fields and pastures.

From Sasso Spaccato, you can easily reach:

• Peracchia and Capodirigo through the Savucco, an ancient woodland trail that followed the natural line of the mountain.

• The hamlets of Santa Maria, passing through the paths of Cocoscia, another historic route connecting the high ridge to the inhabited areas.

A mysterious place

The silent atmosphere and the imposing rock cleft have contributed, over time, to create an aura of mystery around this place. In the oral tradition of Tallacano and neighboring villages, Sasso Spaccato is also remembered for tragic episodes that occurred during centuries of instability and forced passages.

For this reason, in some family stories and collective memory, the area is also known as a burial ground: a remote location, difficult to reach but close to the boundaries between multiple mountain communities, occasionally used for isolated burials during the most challenging periods of Acquasanta’s history, related to cholera.
