Pomaro
Pomaro di Acquasanta Terme is a small stone village at 500 meters altitude, overlooking the Fosso Rio Valley. Born in medieval times around the church of Santa Maria, it preserves travertine portals, a 19th-century tower and the majestic Panichi palace. From here the view runs to the Laga Mountains, among spectacular sunsets and ancient silences, where today one finds the authenticity of rural hospitality.
Located at approximately 500 meters altitude, Pomaro is an ancient village in the upper Tronto valley, now a hamlet of the Municipality of Acquasanta Terme. Its name appears in documents from the 14th century, when the church of Santa Maria was registered in the Ascoli cadastre as the nucleus of aggregation for the first dwellings built in local stone.
Pomaro was born as a small rural center connected to the ancient Castrum Montis Acuti, later Montacuto, which in 1289 was sold to the city of Ascoli by the noble Guiderocchi family. The layout of the territory still preserves the scattered arrangement typical of medieval villages, with houses in travertine (lapis asculanus) and sober yet elegant architecture, marked by carved portals and entrance loggias.
The church of Santa Maria dominates the lower part of the village (Pomaro basso): inside it houses a Christ Pantocrator in travertine and an ancient large wooden crucifix. The building, rebuilt several times since the 16th century, is flanked by a portal dated 1914 with a circular opening that illuminates the nave.
Continuing upward, one encounters a perfectly preserved 19th-century tower house and the Panichi palace (Pomaro alto), built in the early years of the 19th century as a noble residence. Made of travertine with a symmetrical facade, it recalls the solidity of a fortress and preserves the pride of a lineage that dominated the area for centuries.
From the village, the view embraces the Fosso Rio Garrafo Valley, up to the Laga mountain chain, with sunsets of rare beauty that set fire to the profile of the hills. Today Pomaro lives in a discreet balance between memory and hospitality: accommodation facilities such as La Volpe Bianca and Il Roccolo have been established here, welcoming hikers and travelers along the routes of the Ancient Mule Tracks of Acquasanta.
