Cagnano is one of the most significant historical centers in the territory of Acquasanta Terme, already mentioned in the Ascoli Piceno Cadastre of 1381, when its land extension and the number of taxpayers exceeded those of the villas of Acquasanta, Luco, and San Lorenzo combined. This fact testifies to the economic and agricultural importance of the village in the Middle Ages. <\/p>\n
The village still presents itself today with a compact layout, entirely built in local stone, where portals, loopholes, medieval arches, and adjoining houses tell of its ancient defensive function. Over the centuries, the town has gone through complex times: the sixteenth century was marked by plagues, famines, bandit raids, and the burning of Acquasanta Terme in 1562, when Cagnano welcomed numerous refugees before suffering the fierce reprisal of Captain Mariano Parisani. <\/p>\n
In the seventeenth century, the Church of San Giuseppe was built, replacing the ancient sacred buildings of Santo Pietro de Portica and Santo Stefano. The twentieth century brought the end of the Bellini family, the participation of residents in the two world wars, and the construction of the Preventorio Montano (now Colonia Montana), which later became a diocesan hostel.
