The date 1533 is engraved on the architrave of the main portal, which probably attests to a renovation or a significant restructuring, as the church already existed in 1039, when Trasmondo and Biliarda ceded the territory of Gottara to the Abbey of Farfa, along with the church of Santa Maria and the rights to the church of San Pietro. The dispute between the Abbey of Farfa and the Curia of Ascoli continued for centuries and was only definitively resolved by Pope Benedict XIV, who assigned all the churches pertaining to Farfa, including San Pietro, to the Bishop of Ascoli. Inside the building, an element of great historical value is preserved: the milestone CXIII of the ancient Via Salaria, originally used as a support for the altar table. It is a stone column 0.85 m high and 0.46 m in diameter, with a collar in the upper part and two inscriptions on the shaft.
